In the month of January,
the average, or normal high temperature is in the
middle 50's. The normal low
temperature is in the lower
30's. However, it is not uncommon
for low temperatures to range from 20 to 50 degrees. The coldest official temperature ever recorded
in Augusta occurred on Jan. 21, 1985, at -1. However, nearly a century
prior, the thermometer dipped unofficially to -6 in 1886. High temperatures can range from 30
to 75. Temperatures may be fickle in January and other months during the
winter. Precipitation usually occurs frequently during the winter months.
Snow is a rare occurrence, but is seen about one out of every two
winters. The average annual snowfall for Augusta is about one
inch. Visit our Precipitation
page for more details on snow history in Augusta.
In the month of July, the
normal high temperature is in the lower 90's. The normal low temperature is
near 70. The warmest temperature ever recorded in Augusta was
108, not in July, but on August 21, 1983, and again most recently on
August 10, 2007. During most summers
there will be at least a couple of days when the thermometer reaches 100 or
higher. Often, high humidity makes the temperatures feel warmer than they really
are. Scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms provide relief from the heat
some days. Even if rainfall amounts are normal during the summer
months, it can still seem as if the area is in a drought because of the
high temperatures.
